The introduction of a gyroscope into the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4 revolutionised mobile gaming. It enabled the device to detect movement up and down, rotation around gravity and vastly improved the accuracy over the accelerometer in the previous models. In conjunction with the acclerometer and compass, the iPhone 4 is now able to detect movement in any axis, which makes for some stunning games. In this AppGuide, I will outline which games make best use of the gyroscope.

The sequel to one of the most popular first person shooters on the AppStore, N.O.V.A. 2 offers the gameplay fans will know and love, but with noticeable improvements. It features Retina Display compatibility, a great online multiplayer experience through Gameloft Live, and of course, gyroscope controls. The gyroscope controls in N.O.V.A. 2 allow you to aim your gun by moving your iPhone accordingly. This adds another level of immersion and feels very natural. The gyroscope controls are some of the best on the AppStore, and are very accurate and true to life. If you begin to lose calibration, you can also drag the aim of your character to a more comfortable position. Fans of the HALO series for Xbox 360 will feel right at home here. N.O.V.A. 2 is great game with lots of content to shoot your way through.
Another great game from Gameloft, this is the sequel to the popular first person shooter Modern Combat: Sandstorm. It also features Retina Display compatibility and Gameloft's great gyroscope controls. The graphics on this game are absolutely amazing, they are almost console quality. The textures are brilliantly high resolution and the frame rate is silky smooth. The multiplayer is great; it is so feature packed Gameloft could almost have sold it as a separate game. You can invite your friends to play alongside you in 10 player online matches through Gameloft live, and I had no problems with lag.
This is the best racing game on the AppStore. It has amazing graphics, and plenty of high-profile cars to choose from. You can play online with up to 19 players at a time, an unprecedented feature on an iOS game. It also has achievements through Game Center and Retina Display compatible graphics. There is plenty of in-game content to race through, and you'll get at least 10 hours gameplay from this game. The gyroscope means that the controls are far more accurate than the original Real Racing app.
This game involves wrapping a piece of rope around increasingly complex 3D shapes. It has more than 100 new levels over the old version, Game Center support and Retina Display compatibility. It's also a universal app, so you won't have to pay for two apps if you want this game on your iPhone and your iPad. It has very realistic shaders which make the sculptures very lifelike. This is a great game with an original concept executed perfectly.
The first game to utilise the gyroscope, this is the best pick up and play game I could find. It features: virtual aiming control system with 3D gyroscopic precision for iPhone4, touch aiming controls for all devices, 12 high fidelity weapons from the arsenals of today's elite militaries, 144 target-shooting challenges set in three different HD firing ranges and you have the opportunity to win medals and compare your results with others on global leaderboards. The controls and the textures on each weapon feel very precise and well polished.
This is a fun game that involves you flipping around your iPhone to match the instructions on the screen. For example, if the screen said "down", you would hold the screen facing the ground. It seems to be mostly about showing off the iPhone 4's gyroscope feature, and it accomplishes this well.
We timed how long it took us to set up each gimbal, ranked how much we liked the iOS and Android apps, noted our experience using the buttons on each handle, recorded how easy (or difficult) it was to balance each gimbal, and noted any included accessories. We also asked customer service at each company how to balance the gimbal, and we recorded how long it took a representative to respond and how helpful they were.
Star Walk 2 is one of the most aesthetically pleasing astronomy apps out there. The app opens with a beautiful live view of the sky, reflecting your current location. The live view also has nice calming background music.
You can tap objects you see in the live sky to get a concise description, as well as a detailed image of the object. The search feature is also great, and the voice search works perfectly. The best feature of Star Walk 2 however, is the time slider that lets you slide through time and see how the objects move.
Perhaps the best feature of Solar Walk 2 is the time bar, which you can use to time travel to see how celestial objects move over time. The paid version of the app also comes with a horde of other celestial objects to look at.
Sky View Free is a unique astronomy app. Its primary feature of the sky view seems similar to other apps on this list at first glance. However, Sky View has an augmented reality (AR) mode for this view, which lets you point your camera to the sky and identify celestial objects in the app.
Astronomy apps don't demand much in terms of smartphone specifications, other than compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, and such. Although it wasn't the case a few years ago, these features are standard now, even in budget smartphones. So, a smartphone is all you need!
Using these tools, apps can create a virtual world right on top of the real one. You can see floating symbols of restaurants nearby, or floating pictures tagged to specific geo-locations. These apps tell you the direction to walk in, and how far away these places are.
When you need to find your car again, the app uses a combination of GPS, compass, and gyroscope to help you find your car again using the onscreen guides. The app even features two levels of GPS accuracy in case you're trying to save battery or are in a rush.
Yes, it's expensive, but for any avid golfer, this app could become your best friend. Containing over 35,000 courses all over the country, this app uses GPS, compass, and gyroscope to help you improve your golf game.
Star Walk is an "interactive astronomy guide" that allows you to point your iPad into the sky and see real-time images pointing you to constellations, stars, and planets. Using your device's compass, GPS, and gyroscope, the app is incredibly accurate.
Just like Uber, Walmart had already chosen React for the web. It was only natural, then, for the company to use React Native for its mobile app projects. Choosing React Native came with many benefits for Walmart such as doubling the development speed, a significantly improved unit code testability, and a shared business logic with the existing React/Redux web app. The resulting mobile app includes a wide variety of features, including order tracking, shopping lists, an item finder and a scanner. All of this made the Walmart Shopping & Grocery app one of the best React Native apps in 2022.
As Facebook is the company behind React Native, it makes sense that they use this platform for many of their projects. One of the best React Native apps in 2022 was definitely Facebook Ads Manager. This was one of the first 100% React Native apps created by Facebook and it includes a clean interface, simple navigation and an intuitive user experience.
React Native has proven to be an excellent cross-platform tool. It saves companies time and money while delivering native-like results. Thousands of apps are currently using React Native, including both startups and Fortune 500 companies.
Every Gen 3 Stages Power meter has a built-in gyroscope in addition to the accelerometer used to measure cadence. Within normal use, the gyroscope is not needed, as the power meter is able to measure both power and cadence using the meter's strain gauges and accelerometer. The gyroscope exists as a secondary option to improve cadence values in certain riding conditions, such as mountain biking or gravel riding in rocky/bumpy conditions.
Since the gyroscope is not needed in most riding conditions, it is disabled by default to conserve battery. To allow it to be turned on and off, we have added a feature to the Stages Power app to allow the end-user to enable the gyroscope. When activated, the gyroscope will run continuously and take measurements simultaneously with the accelerometer. With each full rotation of the crank, the cadence values will be compared between the two sensors to ensure they are both reading in unison and only good, accurate cadence values are sent on to the head unit.
Please note that using the power meter with the gyroscope enabled will result in about a 10% decrease in battery life. For this reason, we recommend leaving it off unless you are doing a significant amount of off-road riding or have noticed issues in your previous power data.
